Associate – Serious Injury (Claimant)

Role Overview

You will manage a high-value caseload of claimant serious injury claims and play a key role in the continued success and growth of the Serious Injury department. The caseload is predominantly RTA-focused and involves complex liability, causation and quantum issues, with claim values ranging from £125,000 to multi-million-pound cases. Allocation of work will reflect your skills, experience and technical expertise.

In addition to fee-earning, you will provide mentoring and leadership support to colleagues within the Serious Injury team. You will act as an ambassador for the department, contributing to strategy, profile-raising and sustainable growth.


Core Responsibilities (Associate)

You will be responsible for delivering the following across your own caseload and, where appropriate, the wider client case team:

  • Acting as a technical expert within your chosen specialism

  • Delivering exceptional client care to individuals who have experienced traumatic and life-changing injuries, both directly and through oversight of team members

  • Proactively progressing cases in line with best practice, and supporting the Team Manager in embedding new ways of working and procedures

  • Maintaining regular, high-quality communication with clients, including face-to-face meetings where appropriate

  • Instructing and collaborating with multi-disciplinary experts, including medical experts, case managers, care and accommodation experts, architects, forensic accountants and counsel

  • Analysing evidence and researching complex legal issues relating to liability, causation and quantum

  • Drafting key documentation such as witness statements, pleadings and schedules of loss

  • Securing early interim payments and appropriate rehabilitation support

  • Maximising outcomes and optimising settlement strategies for clients

You will also contribute to the wider profile and reputation of the department, including:

  • Supporting relationships with industry and charitable organisations

  • Case reporting, article writing and contribution to testimonials and thought leadership

  • Raising awareness of the department internally and externally

Leadership and people responsibilities include:

  • Motivating and supporting your client case team, ensuring clear objectives and KPIs are met

  • Identifying and escalating performance issues where necessary and supporting development plans

  • Conducting monthly 1:1s, regular technical and case reviews, and providing structured feedback and mentoring

  • Operating effectively in a target-driven, high-quality environment

You may also be required to undertake other reasonable tasks aligned with the needs of the business.


Key Performance Indicators

Performance will be measured against a range of KPIs (non-exhaustive), including:

  • Achievement of agreed results and service level agreements within your client case team

  • Demonstrable development, competence and engagement of team members

  • Delivery of high standards in client care, technical reviews and client retention

  • Effective case progression, maximising recoveries, fee income and accurate time recording

  • Management and reduction of write-offs

  • Contribution to business development, departmental strategy and growth

Performance will be reviewed through regular one-to-one meetings with your Line Manager.


Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualified Solicitor or Fellow of CILEX with a minimum of 8 years’ PQE, or equivalent experience with the ability to charge and recover at Grade A rates

  • Proven track record as lead fee earner on serious injury claims, with strong technical expertise and practical knowledge of litigation and court procedures

  • Experience of mentoring, supervising or developing junior colleagues; a collaborative team player and role model

  • Demonstrable commitment to delivering outstanding client care

  • Strong professional profile within the personal injury sector, with evidence of contributing to brand or profile-raising activity

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining consistently high standards

Desirable

  • Previous supervisory or people-management experience, including performance management and development

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and objection-handling skills

  • Confident user of case management systems with strong IT skills (including Word and Excel)

  • High level of attention to detail and strong organisational capability

  • Positive, self-motivated and resilient, with the ability to adapt to change and challenge

  • A proactive approach to personal development and the development of others

  • Business development experience and an established professional network within the industry

  • Existing links with relevant industry or charitable bodies
